customising is highly addictive once ye start , zombs are a lovely place to jump off from ...th citadel paints are pretty damn good though i do like th tamiya range as well, games workshop sell some very cheap airbrushes and although ye cant do fine detailing with em are great for thin layers and building up depth to a colour
look forwars to seeing this finished mush

i finally finished the bunch-o-customs for fellow 3A boardie chronic.
so here, again, is JDF Badbot and Kitty plus guns
and bag (the print reads 'catlover'. letters are GID)
and a scratchbuilt riot shield for chronic's JDF Dropcloth.

furthermore there's a membership hoodie (3AA 4EVR) for one of chronics TQs,
a re-dyed TQ dress and undies (same red as the stripe, not shown) and
of course the newly hairdo-ed LS head plus a 1:6 scale Bonehead.

Absolutely amazing work! How did you get the hair on Liitle Shadow to look like that. It pops and has depth at the same time!

Okay, latest update on the zomb custom.

I've gone over the head and hands with a second coat of the Daemonite Hide purple base colour. I then proceeded to apply two, separate thin washes of the Druchii Violet wash to the head and hands.

This wasn't the original plan, as I was going to only use this wash around the eyes and mouth of my zomb, but the other wash just didn't look right. It flattened the colour of the purple down too much and when it gathered in the folds and creases it just looked wrong.

So, a simple dab with some tissues and the application of just water on my wash brush and "Viola!" all gone and no drama - a BIG lesson learnt there! Best thing I got from that was actual proof that even if something does go wrong, if you're quick you can easily correct it.

Other things I've learnt - the plastic sleeves that your Citadel brushes come with make awesome little stands when painting the head and hands. Just pop a little blu-tack on the end, push it into the socket and you're good for a little holder that you can twist, turn and avoids getting your fingers on the thing you're trying to paint. And when you're done just put a little more blu-tack down on your worktop and push the other end in, great for drying them without laying them down on a surface.

I've also put a base coat on the forearms and lower leg of my figure.

Do you guys paint them all over? What do you do with joints? And the pegs that go into the boots and wrists? If I paint these won't it just wear off )or worse gum up the joint with paint and make it stick?)

Advice would be great.

Saigon, you are killing it with both Bleak and F-Legion, mate.

Edited for zomb custom update.

I've applied two coats of the Druchii Violet wash to the base coat on the body of the figure which has given it a deeper, richer colour.

The only thing is, even though the wash is meant to run in to the deeper nooks and crannies of the figure and add depth it just kind of sits on the surface of such a plain texture. It's added a depth to the colour but there is a touch of "splotchiness" to it that means it doesn't look the same shade all over. It's not uniform. Not sure if that is an issue or not though.

I also added another wash to the head and painted the hair a base colour of Warpfiend Grey.

But I seem to have reached the limit of my abilities....Tried some fine detail work and I just seem to lack control (and eyesight). It really does make me appreciate what you guys do even more.

Tried to put some fingernails on the hands using the Warpfiend Grey and a fine brush but just seem to have made a mess of it. Can't seem to get the tip to go where I want and I seem to be overloading the brush.

Tried to create my own wash for the hair to add a bit of depth, but not sure it's turned out that great. Also used some Khorne Red on the mouth to give it some definition and put a base of the grey on the teeth, but again just feel like I've screwed him up a bit.

Planning a wash on the mouth to darken the red down a bit and a dry brush of lighter grey or white on the teeth.

I understand that a dry brush of a lighter colour over the features can add even more definition, but I'm really unsure as to how to do it on his face without botching it.

hey blankedboy, ok first off it is coming along great! and it's good that you are exploring stuff and learning from it

ok did you gave it a good coat of primer before the base coat? I had a problem before that at first it might look like the paint is dry but when I put it on a storage and kept it for a week or two, the paint went bizarre and I can actually wipe the paint off

so after that I always always use a primer with a very reliable brand

so ok if this is the kind of effect you are looking for, you need to:

start with a darker base coat color (black or a darker shade of purple)
try using the sponge method for the highlights instead of dry brushing, it gives a
deteriorating skin effect, best for zombs

use a more pale looking color for the highlights by mixing a ratio of 80% purple + 20% light gray, but always test it on a different platform/figure before applying to the actual one

hope this helps man

btw, what you did with the arms and legs are great, there is no way to avoid paint chipping on the joints so best to paint the areas that are only visible

That hoodie is the BOMB! It never ceases to amaze me at the quality and creativeness of all you guys/gals.
And the F-Legion pic WOW! makes me want an f-legion figure that much more.
Need to find some hoodies for my sorta custom TK, and junglevet because they look cool on all the figures.
Also the head on that zomb is looking cool especially the mouth.
Wwwetworks explain the method with the sponge rather than dry brushing please.

Cheers for the reply, Carlo! It's great to get tips and advice from someone as experienced as you are. Seriously, you, KidAkira and Nosferatu are totally my inspiration for doing this, the quality of the customs you guys come up with are on a whole other level.

As for the zomb, well, I learned another valuable lesson. A couple actually - don't paint in poor light (I was working on the figure late at night), don't rush things (I hurriedly applied a wash rather than taking it slow and getting it right) and leave things to dry properly before judging the quality of the paint job (the paint was still damp in places when I looked at the figure). All of this lead to the "splotchiness" and uneven application of paint I was seeing.

Looked again with fresh eyes the next morning and cleared the whole thing up with a careful, even wash over the top of the effected area and we are all good again.

Since then I've been using the Reikland Flesh wash on the mouth to tone down the Khorne Red I put on. I've tried a light dry-brush of white over the grey of the teeth (which doesn't appear to have made a massive difference, not sure I've done it right). I've applied a couple more coats of wash to the body parts to get a nice rich, deep purple going on and I've totally cheated on the fingernails to tidy them up a bit.

Have to say, as well, I am enjoying this so much! It is way more fun than I thought it would be, I'm actually doing better than I imagined I would, which helps a lot. Still frustrated by my lack on ability at times but I'm finding things out as I go along , which is good.

I'm now eyeing some of my other zombs...even though I know I won't paint them I'm getting ideas as to what colours might look good on them

Okay, back again with an update.

Some things going great and I'm really happy with them, others not so good. I feel myself getting more frustrated with the stuff that doesn't work (or that I cant do) the closer I get towards completion. The more "finished" I think it looks, the more hacked oof I get when I think i've screwed it up.

First, the good. Body and hands are looking great. Really deep purple colour that I really like. I love doing the base coats and applying the multiple washes and seeing the depth appear in the colours and the contours and textures become more defined.

Case in point the arms and hands (notice the total cheat on the fingernails). I stuck the newly cleaned up t-shirt on him as well to get an idea of how the colours play against a bolder, less weathered black.:

And I'm happy I got a consistent colour on the legs as well. Not attempted any sponge on them yet though.

The bad is my attempt at blending some colours on the hair of the figure. Total bodge job, can't get a hang of the dry brushing thing (f*cking useless technique if you ask me, but that's probably because it's not working for me). The colours didn't blend, they look so obviously like paint sat separate from each other it's not even funny.

Maybe it's because the hair on the figure isn't a defined piece, it actually joins straight into the face and head, but I'm having a really hard time with it. Got so pissed off I just grabbed some white in an attempted to define the edges of the hard from the rest of the face with a solid line, but even that doesn't seem to have worked. Doesn't look smooth, can't get a decent edge on it and (again) it so obviously looks like paint that I gave up and came to rant on here.

Only fair I show my mistakes as well, as ,my successes though...

Yeah, the Finger Gang look great. Shame I wasn't into ThreeA when they dropped. May have to try and track down #5 and #8 on the after-market. They are by far my favourites. I might try and build my own robo-gang and add them to my Johnson and F-Legion...damn, means I have to track down a JungleVet as well now!?
