I'm trying to make removable masks for a samurai series that I wish to make in the near or not so near, damn midterms, future. I've made some and would love to hear feedback as to what direction i should move towards as well as criticism on how to improve. Also, I would like to see if people would actually be interested if I do ever make a series. Appreciate any advice. :prayer:

The dunny that I am using in the pictures is just one of my first customs so it would obviously not be the one I would use for the final custom

First batch of three masks that I made. The gold is very very very very sloppy as it was soft body and I had no clue what that meant so it will be fixed as soon as I get the time to. Yes, they are all removable.

2nd Set. Just simple spray paint at the moment. Should I add some sort of design or should I leave it as is and not risk fukcing it up? :-k

In my opinion the clay seems a bit too thick on all of them. And the last one I just don't like at all.... I don't know exactly why, maybe because I don't like unbalanced things.

yea, i agree. but if it's too thin, it breaks reallly easily. the connection part between the two ears of the dunny has to be thicker or else it can break easily. i'll try making it thinner and thinner as i go along i guess. i'm considering using a wire frame and then going from there.

detachable masks would be awesome if i could pull it off. but i'm gonna take it one step at a time for now. i originally wanted to do detachable masks but to do that, i'd have to look into cutting the dunny and finding the appropriate pieces and what not. i'll look into that as well i guess.

thanks for the comments so far and keep them coming please!

I like 'em.

Yeah some parts are a bit thick, my DOOM mask sculpt broke loads while making it so I know thin is hard to work with.

My favourite is mask 2A. I think the wire frame might be a really good idea too :)

Good start. I have also been working on some masks and can attest to the difficulty of such an undertaking. Making them thin and strong is a real challenge. Here is a couple sugesstions for you. Definatley go smaller and thinner. If you are painting over the clay, use light colors as you will be able to see expressions in the clay better. Also try to keep the shape of the mask simple but make the designs on it as intricate as you want. I like the shape of 2a, the indents on 2c and the gold inlay on B. Keep at it and the sure to post updates as you do more.

thanks DMS! yea, i originally didn't like it but after i sanded down the sides a bit, it looks better. i guess i'll go with that idea and refine it. there actually is a piece of paper clip in between the top and bottom piece at the nose area. \:D/

appreciate the comments. yea, i just tried another one last night and it turned out pretty decent so i'll post pictures as i go along. seems that 2a is the way to go thus far. and i definitely agree with the "simple structure, intricate design" suggestion you made. i just need to figure out some japanese designs that won't be viewed as too cliche like cherry blossoms or some calligraphy. if anything, i might just have to do that. thanks again and i'd love to see how your masks are going as well! :prayer:

These are the ones I made. They are about a 1/8th of an inch thick made from sculpey and painted over. They are just prototypes so the sculpt and paint job is pretty shabby. I do not know where I am going with this as far as what the final application will be . Maybe an african shaman mask... At this point I just want to see if minature dunny masks would work. And from the result, it looks like I still have some work to do...
hope it's allright i'm posting these in your thread...

perfectly fine with me. hmmm, are they removeable or are they just separate masks that are tied on with string? and you seem to be running into the same problem of clean, cut line that i have at the moment, unless you are actually going for that look? and as having "some work to do", that makes the two of us. \:D/

great idea, but I agree with everyone else (and yourself) that the execution needs to refined. basically, make it thinner. I think your idea about making a wire frame should help, you should pursue that next. good luck!

Wow we're working on almost similar ideas. You just got to work with it more. I was able to do it and keep it thin. Lots of sanding, and you should be fine! Also may want to try this as well... paper mache and DAS air dry clay if you want it lighter and thinner. But sanding is the key.

a lot harder than it seems but give it a shot, you might have better luck. I'm assuming you want them removable. Right?

Yea, i tried it two nights ago and was able to get it thinner but i definitely have more work to go. do you use a file or anything to sand though because sanding with just paper often doesn't lead to clean cut lines and greatly increases the risk of the mask cracking due to the increased pressure when you're holding it. i guess i just have to take it more slowly i guess.

and yea, i tried the frame with one kind of wire but it was too thick so i'm going to buy thinner wire and put that on the thicker wire. and yea, definitely want it to be removable and possibly go towards the direction of having it be able to stick into the dunny and what not. but that's if i can perfect this first.

Hey just thought of this even though it's kind of morbid. #-o Why don't you utilize another dunny and cut off it's face, do your sculpting on that as well as sanding and you'll have your removable mask via "Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs"? I think it might work and the vinyl is definitely stiff enough for you to work with. You may have to sand the inside a bit to allow for the roundness of the dunny snout. \:D/

yup, i thought of that actually and on top of that, scribe suggested i make a resin imprint of the dunny face and scuplt on that as well. i might try it out with super sculpey or firm sculpey or something else and go from there. how are you proceeding on doing yours though?

i wanted to make detachable armor too but that will be another step in this long, arduous but fun process. \:D/
