My son Hunter is in 1st grade and he was talking to his art teacher one day about Uglydolls. Turns out she is a huge Uglydoll fan as well! I shared pictures with her of our large vinyl toy and plush collection and she asked me to come into her art class and talk to both 1st grade classes about our collections and in particular, about Uglydolls. She had decided that it would be a great way to start a new art topic and project - the kids would draw, sew, and write a story about their own "uglydoll" they create! I haven't seen the final products yet, but his teacher tells me that it has been one ofher most successful projects in art and the kids were really excited. The drama teacher liked what the art teacher was doing, so she decided to have the kids take their ugly creations, give them a voice, and act out scenes during drama class.

I am sure that parents in Normal, IL are wondering why all of their kids are asking for uglydolls for Christmas. :tonqe:

Here are a few pictures from the class that I thought you all would enjoy.

How wonderful and creative! And it's great to see kids gravitate to dolls because of what they are, not because they're characters in a TV show or movie!

That is such a wonderful school project. It taks so many different subjects and rolls them together, plus with uglydolls!

Hunter brought his home yesterday (his new Ugly was named "Ghostlegs"). Here is a link to the school art website to view some of the Uglydolls the kids made. His teacher is still taking pictures and uploading photos.

His school is Thomas Metcalf Elementary in Normal, IL.

The kids did a magnificent job on their Uglys and their teacher is amazing. It is a Lab School associated with Illinois State University so attendance is very limited and it is extremely hard to get in (but it isn't a private school). They do alot of alternative teaching methods and the curriculum is flexible. This is why a project like this can happen.
