Best Manufacturer of Artist Toys?

Post by MrMeek » Wed Aug 23, 2017 7:27 am

Hi
I am a newbie to a forum and this forum. I am currently doing some research on artist Toys. I have a couple of 'Crazysmiles' which I collected some years ago. I am looking at bringing out a Ltd Edition Toy but have no idea how to go about it. Designs are no problem as I have them in them in the bag. I am looking for the best manufacture or an industrial designer I can collaborate with to develop my idea etc. I really would appreciate any leads, links, referrals that could help me on my path. Any advice would be truly appreciated.

Many Thanks.
Mr Meek.

Welcome to the boards.

Most artists that you see on store shelves and online today started by either customizing platform toys or self-producing. They didn't start as production-level designers. It sounds like you already have original designs, so my advice would be to have a 3D sculptor recreate your designs in a modeling program. You can then have these 3D printed (using professional-level printers, not those Makerbot things). These 3D printed sculpts can be refined and used as masters for creating molds for resin casting. You will then need to either hire a painter or paint them yourself. If you're producing a ton of them, you could create copper masks for the painting process, but this is very expensive.

In other words, you need to either be ready to pay tens of thousands of dollars to have your item produced in China. Or you can go the DIY path and test the waters.

Hope that helps!

The other option is to go with a resin figure producer like Argonaut Resin for example. They do smaller sized runs of poured resin toys that you have created the designs of. I'm pretty sure MikeyPuff on the boards here has used them to help with some aspects of his amazing chess piece series such as the Rook figure. They produce really high quality work without completely breaking the bank if you like the idea of small run resin.

PS Argonaut Resins' Tuttz and Pharaoh Dog figures are two of my all time favourite resin designs so you know I'm not exactly unbiased here.

Awe yardarm I'm flattered :D

But yet silicone and resin are the cheapest route to go but takes some time to learn. Argonaught resins is amazing at it and he tought me alot. But for something with a lot of detail it may be a little difficult. For professionally done toys ide check out flying lulu. You'll see all the stuff they gave done on their site. But you'll be paying for it. Injection molding cost a pretty penny and I feel is only worth it if your guaranteed to sell your product out.
