I think it's a good discussion topic. And given how dead the forums are usually, we'll have to settle on reading past posts of boardies long gone.

Now that I've thought about it, you're 100% correct... :)

I've moved away from mini figs and mass produced pieces for the most part and moved on to smaller runs, custom one offs and Sofubi..

Most of you know, that sh!t ain't cheap!

With that being said, it's not uncommon for me to spend a few hundred a month on toys, Designer Con weekend alone, I spent about a grand.. I've actually slowed my roll a bit lately due to some things tat the wifey thinks are more important than toys and art. Lately, I've been trying to trade some of my older, more rare pieces that doesn't interest me anymore for stuff that tickles my fancy..

As for myself, let's see if I can remember what I bought in 2016

$165 - Kaws Open Edition - with that sweet MoMa coupon and MoMa membership discount (have yet to receive)
$21 - 3 Byrons from the VAG Series
$40 - 2 Uamou Oni
$50 - Shoko Nakazawa Engimono Department Exclsuive
$50 - Maguro Mame Moyashi
$60 - Lobster Mame Moyashi
$30 - LEGO Batman Movie Minifigs
$9 - One Punch Man Bearbrick
$25 - Chris Ryniak Chibi Pocket Ice Edition
$30 - Bandai 1/12 Boba Fett

Total: $480

I'll add more when I get home but I've definitely sold more stuff than I've bought as I've tried to whittle down my collection due to my changing taste and my desire to be minimalist. (Sold a ton of ThreeA, Dunnys, etc) I'm now more into larger, sculptural pieces that are less "cartoony" in aesthetics such as most Dunnys, although I do seem to make plenty of exceptions...

Here's a partial list of what I bought in 2016. This doesn't include mini figs for the most part..

Yellow Conifas
Green Conifas
Black Glitter Mini Skelve
GID Swirl Stingy Jack
Pink GID Mummy Boy (Skullbrain X)
Custom Mockbat
Green Heathen Snake
Green GID Big Sal
Pea Green Bugbite
Yellow glitter Skull Hevi
High Contrast Hell Sludge Demon
Infected Dunny (Raspberry Beret)
GID Power Mister
Raspberry Sludge Demon
Meat Sludge Demon
Purple/yellow swirl Alavaka
Yellow Alavaka
Menage a Trois Deux Bodhisattva Alavaka
Pink/black swirl Alavaka
Black Conifas
Stroll - Clear pink
Dualbat - Clear Pink
Skelve - Honey bee Kuma

I spent approximately $1300 this year on these pieces. I know there's more, I'm just drawing a blank..

Man, I wish. Those are some amazing figures but I've never had the kind of cash that I could drop like that. I didn't get into the hobby until after I was married and now with a kid... that dries up the discretionary funds pretty quickly. I am pretty envious. I used to love being a mule in Tokyo for folk. That meant I got to buy lots of stuff for folk here on the boards and my main reward was being able to take pics of them (if they were loose) before shipping them on. This past year the only thing I've bought was a Rook but a few weeks a go Itokin Park sent me a wonderful care package from Japan with one of his little astronauts in it. So I guess two figs in the past 12 months. -grin-

I'm hitting up Paul Kaiju's show next weekend and plan on spending a minimum of 600 bucks..

The wifey and I are trying to start a family so the days of spending ridiculous amounts of money on toys will most likely end very soon.

Let me rephrase that, The days of spending ridiculous amounts of money on toys for myself will most likely end very soon.

Guess we'll be seeing one of those baby sales coming soon. :goodman:

I do wonder if new, younger people are getting into this world as a bunch of people age out of it.

I'm just finishing up my undergrad, so my collection tends to stay pretty small, and I'm funding it mostly by eating poorly and saving a whole lot from work. That is, the generational shoes are getting filled, one way or another :D

I don't really know anyone else my age who does this though; basically everyone I talk to regularly in vinyl is older. Probably depends on your communities--I feel like KAWS collectors will tend to be older because they were either around when OG releases happened or are making enough to buy them. Perhaps more younger collectors are buying Dunnys and shifting into affiliated artists that way.
