No more PEECOL?

Post by pocketwookie » Tue Jun 17, 2008 10:51 am

I just saw this on ToysREvil:
These 6 figures rounds out the "current" entire run of characters [www / eBoy interviewed on TRE] - and would there be more to add to the Peecol-Universe? Would YOU want to see more of them? Or are you happy tis all at an end? Tell us WHY you like them, or hate them.

Speculation? or just stirring the pot?

I think the PEECOL hype is nearing its end, and they are contemplating whether or not to end the series. As a person who has all the PEECOLS, including the series coming out next month, I think this should be it, and Kidrobot should move on.

So maybe they just try releasing a series once or twice a year, or something. Rethink some releases/exclusives? or the distribuition? I don't know. Considering the amount of work and passion Eboy put into these, I hate to think these guys didn't last a year.

I'm still not convinced this is the end of the run, only time will tell I guess. If this is all she wrote for the Peecols, I'd have to say that KR really missed a lot of opportunities inherent in this platform. This should have had a ton of potential as a promotional vehicle for complementary businesses, much as Toy2R does with their Qees. I'd see it less as a failing of eboy's artists than a failure of KR's marketing people.

I'm not willing to call it a failure, since I don't know what KR's intent was behind the series.
They may have accomplished everything they set out to accomplish, regardless of how these have kind of ended up as a message board whipping boy. :doubt:

But I will agree that it would have been cool to see these as more a platform like the Qee. In fact, that would be pretty awesome.

When I say a marketing failure, I don't mean that they failed to "sell" these eboy figures to a general audience or that they should have opened it to an artists series (imo, the Dunny is KR's artist series, and Peecol would be superfluous to that). I mean that they should have pushed Peecol as more of a cross-marketing promotional thing, the kind of thing that Toy2R has been so successful at with their many promotional Qees such as the Comme de Garcons and Sony figures, for example. They started to head that direction with the Swizz release and then seemed to just back off. As a "human" platform, rather than an animal shape, there should be a lot of potential there, but these partners aren't going to just come to KR and beg for the opportunity—it's a concept that needs to be sold. I was hoping to see a lot of interesting commercial ventures along these lines. I'd think they could do a good business on movie tie-ins, band promos, etc. Of course, then the criticism would have been that they "sold out". But I think there's plenty of people who would be interested in the figures. It could be a very interesting series that started to reflect the disposable "pop culture" of our times. They could build two audiences then: a Peecol audience that was collecting Peecol, and another audience that did not necessarily collect Peecols but would buy a platform featuring characters that represented their other interests.

Ah...gotcha.

Depending on minimums, how flexible KR/eBoy were willing to be with packaging/branding, etc...I think you're right. That could have become a great way for KR and eBoy to make a nice bit of change, extend their brand, and provide a cool and low-cost premium item for other brands.

But I think that since it's not a property that Kidrobot "owns", then that sort of thing is really at the mercy of eBoy's whims and desires for the project. And that might well just be the sort of thing that they aren't really interested in, and the few examples we saw were a matter of whim and mutual interests rather than active cross-promotion.

Kidrobot seems to have always held a "they'll come to us" kind of attitude, and it works. And on top of that, I applaud PB having the stones to make his product almost difficult to find and purchase. It's counter-intuitive marketing, but it's worked. Kidrobot doesn't have customers so much as they have evangelists. It's a destination brand.

Would using the Peecol as a larger audience, corporate premium item really be a benefit to KR? I really don't think so. Could be wrong, but I can't see how it would do anything other than increase demand while KR continues to make exactly as many as they feel they should.

Good observation, but for me it raises too many more questions! :-s

Yeah, in my mind, the biggest drawback to using Peecol like this is that people who are already KR customers would be screaming "Sellouts!" to the rafters. But that pretty much already happened after they introduced apparel. I think if they were careful about their partnerships (ie. found "cool" partners who added credibility to KR's brand) that it would be a smart move. Cross-promotions often bring in new audiences so I would imagine that, just as an example, if there were a Radiohead set of Peecols, Radiohead fans (generally pretty hardcore) would pick them up, and in the process be exposed to other designer vinyl for the first time. Maybe actively seeking out these kinds of relationships is more effort than KR wants to put into their marketing efforts though.

Or maybe it's just more than they have the manpower for at the moment....or it's just a direction that PB isn't interested in.

Who knows? One minute he's culture jamming and singing the praises of Suckadelic bootlegs, but at the same time he's selling his stuff to Urban Outfitters and Metropark.

I think it's safe to say that I have no friggin' clue what KR is going for.

Cool. Glad to hear that. Even if it's only a few singles, I'm down. Sure I'd like more of the series format, but I'm happy just to get new ones.

Thanks for posting, smorkin!
