USPS is charging a ****load for shipping now

Post by DX_Psycho » Mon Aug 06, 2007 12:52 pm

I shipped out the stuff I muled. Friggin Kathie Olivas toys were $25 each for shipping because of USPS' new rules for adding more money based on dimensions.

When you say parcel post you mean first class mail yes?

I've been sending out packages via first class mail. Not so bad and it takes less than 10 days. For some odd reason our USPS ships stuff out fast.

Ooo I see.

I haven't really shipped out anything big. I've opted for Prioriity on the bigger ones since they are more valuable. I've only had to do that a few times.

Yep, I had the same experience with shipping a SUG this weekend. Crap for brains I am, I offered to ship USPS + Insurance... Barely came out even on the deal. It's FedEx for me from now on...

I was talking to Frank Kozik at the Con, and it sounds like USPS has pretty much doubled their rates. With the new rules on dimension and weight, as well as new rules and rates for shipping internationally, the prices are out of hand. Even packages going to Canada have to go first class, I shipped out a smokey for a friend, and it cost almost $20. I shipped out some packages a few months before the changes, and one was a package to Toronto. It cost me half that.
USPS is notoriously bad as far as quality and speed as it is(at least here in Chicago), but I used it because it was cheaper. Now I might as well use UPS or Fedex. The price difference is practically nil, but you get tracking, insurance, and a more reliable carrier.
DO NOT SUPPORT MINDSTYLE OR KACHING BRANDS. THEY HAVE SCREWED OVER COUNTLESS ARTISTS. IF YOU CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT DESIGN THE ART YOU LOVE, THEN DO YOUR PART AND BOYCOTT THESE COMPANIES.

Great purchases from HBCoffin, Quest1mark, ontheDLwhoooops,Fericfanatic, Justinvancouver, flabby, lasergun, mossy, the Count, xblmanimal, sindekat, agitprop, irsk, Playdoh, puppetbrain, Tommynathan, Toybox
Great sales to De Large, SAMBA, zombiemonkey, justsusy, uberboy, guinnessfan

Yep - pack it tight and well...no room for extra padding.

Most toys aren't bad, it's just the really big ones. $20 to ship a labbit cause I had 3 extra inches on each side...closer to $10 without that.

It's still not as bad as it sounded like when the rules 1st went into play. And USPS is still better international than

Hopefully, the USPS will price themselves out of the market, but that's wishful thinking. Currently it's all we use via our eShop and we hate it! Fedex currently doesn't have a patch we can access to plop it into our osCommerce program. Again, hate it.

If you can take the time, I suggest Fedex Ground Service. Much more reliable than the USPS and even UPS from our (years of) experience. Rates are usually cheaper as well. And, should anything go wrong you can file a claim a lot easier than you can with the Fascists at the USPS.

If you end up using USPS, I also suggest doing the transactions online. If you do that, they offer delivery confirmation for free and it's all locked in online. Simple to use and everything is setup there so that you get the correct amount, size, etc. situated.

Bottom line is people have to understand that it's no longer as inexpensive as it use to be shipping stuff out. Gas prices have obviously affected the rates and skyrocketing employee costs...

Okay, there's my two-cents. FWIW

The only crappy thing about using either Fedex or UPS is that they automatically charge a brokerage fee of $25 when coming over the border, whereas USPS won't because they are considered a postal carrier. Apparently Fedex and UPS are only considered shipping companies, absolute BULLSH*T on the government's part......love socialism!

Although I haven't felt the repercusions of the recent changes, and honestly wasn't even aware of them...

I used to be a strong advocate of USPS. Maybe it was just my area, but I never once had a problem with any package I received or sent out...and there were tons going both ways. Definitely the most reliable, consistent, and quick East-to-West coast provider...and the cheapest, to boot. It seems I was in the minority with prefering to use USPS over one of the private carriers. Fedex is the absolute worst in my mind. If I'm gonna be forced to use one of the private carriers because of the rate increases at the Post Office, I guess I'm going with UPS.

i always walk to the USPS counter and say, "Cheapest possible." Unless it's something expensive then i'll add insurance, shipping confirmation, and maybe tracking.

i was a strong advocate of USPS also, until their new rules came out with the dimensions. they slap on an extra $10 if you have a certain dimension. it's ridiculous. what used to be $15 before is now $25.

watch out for using the priority stuff for non priority mailing, even if you're covering it up and such. my grandma did that for years and we got a couple hundred dollar bill from usps for misuse of priority materials after she died.

Relatives are not responsible for ones debts or dues when said person dies. Just a good FYI to know.

Any way, yeah shipping is getting out of hand. When I went to ship a 5" labbit to the UK, UPS wanted $70 to ship it. Went to USPS and paid around $14.
