Hey guys,
Need cheering up today. Had to put down my 14 year old Jack Russell yesterday, for humane unselfish reasons. I was prepared for it so am handling it pretty well, but when I came home, I realized that the toys that once made me smile, don't anymore. Does this pass? I know toys don't equal a dog's love, but does this spell the end for my childish obsession or is it just a phase?

Also, does anyone have any true stories to share about dogs/cats going to heaven? I've heard first hand stories of seeing loved ones at the tunnel of light etc, but never pets. Don't make up stories to cheer me up, i'm not that bad, (plus, as I tell my niece all the time, "dont' lie, Jesus is listening") just genuinely interested.

So sorry to hear this. I actually had to deal with this same exact situation a short while ago with my amazing pooch. He was also 14 years but his health was truly beyond recovery and his old age caught up with us. Very sad. Miss him all the time. Keep your chin up.

Thanks Guru. Luckily I have another dog plus 2 cats to keep me distracted. Sounds like you were in the same boat as me - so sorry. Sucks that dogs don't live as long as humans - God screwed that up in his master plan of life....IMHO. ;)

Not a dog story, but a cat one.

I had gotten a kitten when I was 2 and well, 16 later he was old, didn't have control of his waste system, etc. One weekend when I was heading out of town for work and I was in a hurry and didn't pet him and give him a kiss goodbye. Tuesday I get a call from my mom - to avoid my dad killing the cat to put him out of his misery, my mom brought him to the shelter, knowing he wouldn't be adopted out, but still delusioning [[not a word, but deal with it]] herself with the thought that he would be. She decides to tell me this while I'm working at the front desk....

This was a while ago, but it still breaks my heart to think of it. I try not to think of it, but I figure he's better off where he is..probably has all the fresh shrimp he could eat :(

It will get better, but it just takes time. We're here for you if you ever need to vent.

As for the toys - I know what you mean. Whenever I'm going through a rough time and I get really depressed I contemplate just selling off my entire collection and calling it quits. Stick with them because they might be able to bring you back out of it :)

I hope you're alright stark! We're all here for you!!

i do have a serious hate for cats though lol

When I moved back over here, I brought my 10 year old cat with me. A few years later, he developed some really odd symptoms. I took him to the vet who couldn't figure it out and also to different specialists.

He lost all of his hair and I ended up having to leave him at the vet because he was so weak. I went to see him every day after class where I'd sit with him. He was always wrapped in a towel because his skin was in bad shape but the vet never wanted to give up. Sometimes I wish he had let me end his suffering... Anyway, one day, I didn't go. I went the day after and he was gone.

It was absolutely heartbreaking. This cat had been with me through a tough time with school and my parents' divorce. He was my world.

The vet let me have a few weeks to get myself together before starting to pay the bills. When I went back, he told me that he knew I was still upset but a stray feral cat they had in back had given birth to kittens the day Peewee passed. He said there was only one boy and would I like to see him. I initially said no but my curiosity got the best of me.

I broke down. He was the spitting image of Peewee.

Needless to say, he was adopted after an hour of, "I'm can't do this." :D
So heaven? Not sure. But pretty sure there was some divine intervention at play.

Peewee 2 (I love this pic of his "insane" look haha: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dirtydiva/322405681/

(edit: ugh sorry, typo - obviously it wasn't a day, he'd still be a little pink jellybean haha)

That's a lovely story - thanks. He looks like one of my cats (Keano) - another stray that i picked up in 2004. He was crippled and I knew no one else would take him. Vet told me he'd likely only live a couple of years as his back was broken - he's still alive today - although he's not eaten or drank since I put Murphy down last Saturday - am taking him in today. Weird. Hopefully Murphy hasn't decided he wants Keano to join him!

Not a great start to 2013 for me in the pet department. Some f**cker shot my other cat with a BB gun and shattered her humerus - she's going in for surgery soon. See pic - even with a broken arm she's still messing with my toys!

If it rains it pours, right? Just want to get this week over with.

Hi guys - thanks for all the kind words. Both kitties are on antibiotics and the BB gun victim is on pain killers too - still no surgery date set yet. I have to force feed the other one as he's still not eating so my days are full of squeezing liquids down resistant kitties' throats - such joy. But at least they're still alive and I have a good feeling things will get better, so here's to hoping. ;)

Hey, I know this thread is old but I'm just passing by to see how you're doing, I sympathize your love for your pets, mines are family to me, I had to put down my cocker spaniel named "enano" (Midget in spanish) cause he got hit by a car and caused him internal injuries years back, it took me a solid month or two to get over that experience but I sill miss him, I've 2 dogs now, another cocker that we adopted from the street and a basset hound, lovely effers both of them, althouth the basset named "toby" is one cranky mofo lol.

Anyway, regarding pets going to heaven, I was raised catholic, but I don't believe in the church, I do believe in god though, in my own way and I also believe in the concept of a soul, some kind of energy that resides within every being, so, I'm sure everybody's souls go to join something bigger, including pets.

I have a lot of philosophy behind those beliefs, but I'm sure you get the picture.

Hope everything is going swell for you now, are you still collecting?

Greetings from Mexico.

Thanks for that Gasparzizou.

Yeah I had to put down one of the cats, just one week after my dog, so it was a rough start to the new year, but things are better now and I'm already putting out feelers for stray kittens. Won't get another dog until later in year as I'm just too busy with work right now to properly train it.

I agree with much of what you said. Every good soul has it's place somewhere. There are two quotes that I tell myself when times are rough: "This too shall pass" and "There will be an answer, let it be". They've yet to be tested in extremes (like Newton parents horrible situation) but they work for the small bumps I've encountered so far.

Great to hear you're holding up man, I know it's kind of shallow thing to hear but, Bruce Lee used to say: "Sorrow strengthens the soul", and it's very true, I've experienced some major depressions myself and I like to think that I'm a rock now due to that, but not an insensitive rock, just, stronger and wiser.

Good thing you're not hurrying to get another dog, he/she will come at their time.

Peace bro :partyman:

Yes indeed... great to hear you're doing good. Tough situation will definitely make you stronger. I have my good ol' boy's pic on my iphone and i look at almost daily and just take a second to think about him and all the awesome times. Sounds corny but man, from him being 8 weeks to almost 15 years old by my side...

Keep on keepin' on.
