Trial and Error........

wow. you know, i consider myself a decent artist, especially with a spray can. Granted, i havent picked one of those up in years, guess that comes with age, marriage,parenting, and just pure lack of time.......I have had MANY(and still do somewhere) blackbooks/sketchbooks, but i liked having those so i could pass them around and have my friends do a piece .

SO let me get to the point......i am pretty new at this whole vinyl art thing, had seen them before, but paid no mind. I guess now, going through divorce, and being away from family, i have a major amount of time on my hands ( as well as a few bucks, eh KIDROBOT!) i am thrilled to find this new(to me) medium...MUNNYS.

So. after reading posts watching some things online, i bought i few blank ones..but not OG munnys....BABY QEE.....because i am still new at this, and have NOT used a munny yet, i am not sure which is better to DIY.

THINGS I KNOW NOT TO DO NOW.......

use PRISMA colors on them......try and repaint with spraypaint, the use PAINT markers on them......boy, this one looks terrible......of course, for nostalgic reasons, i will keep it, you know, tht FIRST ONE!

so fround the forum here, i see alot of people talk about sharpie brand paint markers, so i went and bought a few today, OMG such a difference!

so i look at mine, then look at the customs some of you cats do, and mine looks like a SECOND GRADER did it!!! LOL i am a firm believer in PRACTICE MAKES U BETTER.

so, tips, secrets, or comments are very welcome. I will post pics, WAIT, no i wont

fine brushes, acrylic paints, and lots of patience.

i myself would never use markers on a custom but i know some people like the paint markers since it would be like using a pen to do your line work ... you can them buy online if you dont have stores that carry them...i know one is krink and the other is posca? i think

i think everyones first attempt wasnt as great as they wanted it to be and ive even seen some customizers that it takes like 5 or more customs to start getting the hang of stuff ...just gotta practice the paint apps to be clean and put your own style onto them

On the other hand...I don't ever use brushed or acrylic paint. I solely use spraypaint, markers and pens. Though I do not use Sharpies ever. Not the regular sharpies, not the paint pens. My advice to you is YES....practice and experience is the best thing. You need to get to know materials, find what you like the best, establish something that makes your work your own and just make stuff. Everyone works in different ways. There are guys that only use brushes, there are guys that use air brushes, cans, pens, markers, people that sculpt with Super sculpey, Magic Sculpt, Aves, people that don't sculpt, people that only use black and white... it's really up to you to make whatever materials you have work for you in a unique way.

ALSO, i have learned REAL munnys are SOOOOOOOOO much better than baby qee

i will ppost the mini i am working on when i am done, it is actually looking alot bettr than i thought.....i like feedbak, good or bad.....makes me work that much harder!!!

so.....after three days( actually, due to severe insomnia, it is LITERALLY 73 hours!) i have finished my absolute very first DIY MUNNY...........I am about to upload some pics......be honest, feedback is VERY welcome, especially from all of you that have been doing this a long time. Damn for your first try is looking pretty tight! Try to take some close up tomorrow in the light so we can have a better look at it.

So, i have learned that the people talking about acrylics were right!!! i ABSOLTELY LOVE THEM!!! and not only that, i learned preparation is absolute KEY!!!!!!

today i painted,3 baby qee devils 2 bears and a bunny......this is because where i am at, NOBODY has even heard of DIY vinyl.......so when i get all the blanks this coming week, MAN OH AN i am going to be busy.......i have also located the long lost airbrush o had down here, going to incroperate that tomorrow as well......

these were a bit tougher than expected, especially with the "theme i am goin with, 3 qee devils, i dont want to give away all the details, so yyou guys will see + i am going to post these pics becaus ei totally value my peers onlinons, these three are goin to be part if my DIY set, i call them "satans spawn"

and i will be getting my blanks this weelk , so expect tosee alot of art utensils!

forgot to mention, those three are NOT done, i had to seal the noses of the bears with modeling clay, so they are drying, and will need more paint and cleaning up =)

WOW! i see all of you guys and your AMAZING customs.......i am working pretty hard, BUT still having alot of fun! TOMORROW is the day i finally get REAL munnys, and no more qee stuff.....

So the acrylics i have been using, come to find out are t least ten years old, i have read alot of the info past an dpresent on acrylics, so tomorrow to the hobby store for some newer paint, i enjoy the medium i think i will stick with it, BUT i know now after sand and prime (even a little paint) i can STILL use markers, my FAV medium! lol anyway,....i knew sooner or later one of my kids would want one, didnt think it would be my oldest......so here are a couple flix....sorry again about the foto quality, still no digi cam =/

looking cool so far, i like the enthusiasm you show. keep at it. practice those lines, practice keeping your hand steady. pull, don't push your brush. you don't need to completely load your brush to keep a steady line....thinning is king. if you ever have any specific questions feel free to PM me, i'll never give you any attitude or rude comments like some will if you post it up in a thread

so here we go, first off thank you guys for keeping up on my No0b adventures! appreciate all the tips,,emails and kind words!!!! today is the day when i get my REAL munnys, although i am glad to have practiced on less expensive vinyl......

so, sculptors i have crazy respect for you guys!!!! that ish is NOT easy, also i think i have the wrong clay, i know what you guys use, it was what was here at the house, i ran out, so getting more today! ill post some pics, the sculptor is named "FRANKENMUNNQEE" due to the fact it is parts from three QEES and two munnys.....LOL i kinda just taped, foiled, filled and sculpted.......but i am pretty sure i need better clay......

the other was the last QEE i bought( matter of fact, last in thie ENTIRE TOWN) LOLOL, I still find it very funny the looks i get when i ask for vinyl toys, and THEN have to explain, usually more than once lol

so here is the last qee.......

finally got the idea i had on the last qee down in this one =) Its still not done, i just like posting progress =)
