I got rid of my road bike earlier this year and now I'm missing it more then ever. I loved riding long distances, but I'm looking for more excitement in my ride. Enter the fix gear (minus the brakes).

Anyone currently riding a fixie...what's your setup? I'm considering the Bianchi Pista to get started. Thoughts?

I am an avid Mountain Biker but I prefer the geared variety of bikes.

I am currently in a quandary as to which new bike to get. I need a 2nd training bike.

It's between

Specialized Stumpjumper HT comp
http://www.leisurewheels.co.uk/products ... 1b3s2p1611

Or

Commencal Supernormal Deluxe
http://www.commencal.com/bike/2007/mtb/index_en.htm

Or

A sooped up Merlin Malt4 with magura Laurin forks and Louise brakes
http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/acatalog/ ... Bikes.html

Or

Charge Duster XC
http://www.chargebikes.com/

Any thoughts from like minded bikers would be appreciated.

Back to topic (sorry!)

Single

I know of two companies that make lovely single speed bikes.

Surly
http://www.surlybikes.com/

And

On One
http://www.on-one.co.uk/

Not single geared but interesting anyway:

Thorn

Just found a Bianchi dealer so I'll probably get this tomorrow...it looks pretty classic and it's at a great entry level price.

I roll a singlespeed twenty-six inch hardtail in the skateparks and at the dirt jumps... Reminds me a lot of my old bmx bikes.

I was a GT guy, but everybody in my "crew" back in the day had a different bike. Robinson, Redline, Hutch, SE, Mongoose, Diamondback. Man I wish I still had my GT...

how much is that going to set you back? Just curious cause im thinkin' of getting into the fixed gear as well.

It retails at $549, but I should be able to get the shop to sell it for $500 out the door. The bike comes in the Gang Greenn color as seen above and an all Chrome version. Not sure what color I want yet...they'll both ride the same you know.

Another entry level bike is the Specialized Langster, but I think this Bianchi Pista is a better setup.

I've always wanted to try my hand at fixed gear riding the Alpenrose Velodrome, but it looks way too intimidating. Fixed gear on a 43 degree bank = scary.

I live on a paved trail that goes 20 miles in either direction. I'll also be riding it around town and on moderately populated city streets. Trust me, I'll get my stuff together before I venture into the roads with this thing.

So I ordered it today on my lunch hour. I ordered the '07 model as it just came out this week. Looks the same and I went with al chrome. It should be here in about a week. Pics to follow...

Fixed gear means NO freewheel. There’s something pure and retro about it, and a lot of riders say there’s sort of a oneness between rider and bike, and a heightened awareness of your surroundings because you’ve got no brakes. I live in the SF area and fixies are everywhere now. People ride right in the heart of city traffic, so I can only imagine there must be a thrill factor involved too. Enjoy your new ride!

Wow- that's pretty hardcore. I just realized that pic of the bike in this thread had no brakes. I know on the trail, singlespeeds and rigid forks are all the rage- I guess this is the equivalent for the street folks...

You got it...no brakes, no freewheel, no holding back.

I'm so stoked about this new ride. I went from riding my road bike 60 miles every other day to riding nothing. That was almost 6 months ago...I'm ready for this. I'm actually looking forward to the learning curve. I like that it's something as simple as a bike, but has an element that I'm not use to and one that requires learning.

I have lots of friends that ride fixed speed bikes, and single speed.
In fact I just biked home last night with my friend Dooley and he has to put effort into my BMX arse constanlty dropping behind.

HUGE BIKE COMMUNITY WHERE I LIVE! I only use my car for my job. delivery

OMG, am I an aging hipster? That's freaking awesome at 28 years of age I've finally amounted to something. LOL

I like pretty much all bikes (except for those that you sit in a full on chair...not a bike). BMX is cool and I rode those for many years, but what am I suppose to do on that thing now? Jump a curb or perhaps launch off a ramp over a few vans. Got to love the bunny-hop. I'll get my "x-game" fix surfing instead.

When it comes to bikes I'd rather cruise on my ratted out beach cruiser and play around on the new track bike. I feel all weird riding a BMX bike these days...I guess it's because I'm aging ; )

BTW, M500...that is a nice bike regardless.

Heck I'm pushing 35 and I'm still out at the dirt jumps hitting dubs and at the skatepark dropping in. Granted I'm not pulling any "backflip x-up no foot can cans" and all that x-game stuff, but I still can hold my own on a good day :) But you are right, surfing is probably a little easier on the old bones- I really need to get back out in the water...

Anyway, congrats on the bike- Heck, I think riding fixed gear in the city is probably crazier than any x-game stuff... Stay safe!

And yeah, that is a nice 24 there M500...

Man I love watching trial mountainbiking, they do some AMAZING things. The amount of skill needed is just incredible. CRAZY stuff!!!
I just like to take it easy on my mountainbike, I have a Trek Y-11 dual suspension carbon frame in mint condition. My fav ever, its actually a piece of art to me and i want it hung on the wall.

CheersPiers
